Making the Most of a Connected Aircraft

Editor's note for the October/November 2016 edition of the Global Connected Aircraft Link.

Welcome to our first edition of the Global Connected Aircraft Link, a sister publication to accompany our highly successful Global Connected Aircraft Summit (GCAS). Here, we expand upon some of the main themes and talking points of GCAS, held in Hollywood, California in June. Once again, we had a number of top airlines take part in the event, during which we took an in-depth look at how internet connectivity can impact the passenger experience, operations and cybersecurity, to name but three.
The eyes of the connected aircraft world will be on APEX in Singapore in October as airlines and providers congregate at one of the industry’s other big events to discuss how connectivity can boost the passenger experience.

In this edition of the Global Connected Aircraft Link, we provide real world examples of how connectivity is making a difference in aircraft operations and passenger experience. We put the spotlight on Cathay Pacific, one of the Asia’s major airlines, and look how it is using connectivity to boost its operations. We also look at U.S.-based Southwest Airlines, and how the carrier is using connectivity to enhance the overall passenger experience.
One of the most interesting topics to come up at GCAS this year was the development of antenna technology. At the event, David Helfgott, the CEO of Phasor, gave a Ted-Talk-style presentation about the latest advances in antenna technology. In this edition of Global Connected Aircraft Link, we expand this topic still further and look at how new antenna technology will be key in driving the efficiency of a connected aircraft.

Via Satellite will be present at the Airline Passenger Experience Association Expo, or APEX, in Singapore, and we will be hosting a technical breakfast alongside Intelsat looking at future-proofing connectivity decisions. Intelsat, which is launching a number of High Throughput Satellites (HTS), is aiming to be a key player in this sector. It should be a very interesting discussion, be sure to join us there!

We are also starting our preparations for the 2017 version of our Global Connected Aircraft Summit, which will take place at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View hotel in Arlington, Virginia, from June 7 to June 9 next year. For more info, be sure to check out our website! We look forward to seeing you there and we hope you enjoy our first edition of the Global Connected Aircraft Link.
